Delegation152 slideswith Participant Handout
Effective delegation will improve efficiency in the workplace. Delegation is appointing a person to act on one's behalf. The word "delegation" was first used to mean "the act of delegating" in the 1610s. Delegate (v.) "to send with power to transact business as a representative," 1520s, from past-participle stem of Latin delegare "to send as a representative," from de "from, away" (see de-) + legare "send with a commission," possibly literally "engage by contract" and related to lex (genitive legis) "contract, law," from PIE root *leg- (1) "to collect, gather."
Did you know that... a paradox of delegation is that it is initially time-consuming. However, the time spent in setting up systems and training staff will pay off in the long term. The principles of delegation are relatively easy to understand; the problem is getting managers to delegate in practice. Obstacles to successful delegation may include lack of training and sense of insecurity on the part of the manager, or external factors such as an absence of suitably skilled staff or the existence of jealousies between employees and associates.
