Delegation

Effective delegation will improve efficiency in the workplace. Delegation is appointing a person to act on one's behalf. The word "delegation" was first used to mean "the act of delegating" in the 1610s. Delegate (v.) "to send with power to transact business as a representative," 1520s, from past-participle stem of Latin delegare "to send as a representative," from de "from, away" (see de-) + legare "send with a commission," possibly literally "engage by contract" and related to lex (genitive legis) "contract, law," from PIE root *leg- (1) "to collect, gather."

A paradox of delegation is that it is initially time-consuming. However, the time spent in setting up systems and training staff will pay off in the long term. The principles of delegation are relatively easy to understand; the problem is getting managers to delegate in practice. Obstacles to successful delegation may include lack of training and sense of insecurity on the part of the manager, or external factors such as an absence of suitably skilled staff or the existence of jealousies between employees and associates.

Procrastination

Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. This can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, depression, and self-doubt among workers, and can interfere with personal and organizational success. The word “procrastination” originated from the Latin word “procrastinationem” in the1540s. It came from the combination of the beginning “pro,” meaning forward, and “crastinus,” meaning belonging to tomorrow.

Procrastination statistics suggest that 40% of people have experienced financial loss due to procrastination. For a business the cost per year for procrastination is a whacking $10,396 per employee. When posed with this question, to what extent is procrastination having a negative impact on your happiness, of the 2700 responses, 46% said quite a bit or very much. And 18% confessed it was an extreme negative effect. The statistics show that procrastination has seen at least a 5-fold increase over the last couple of decades. In the 1970s, only about 4-5% of people indicated that they considered themselves as procrastinators. Today, that number is at a staggering 20-30%.
