Delegation

Effective delegation will improve efficiency in the workplace. Delegation is appointing a person to act on one's behalf. The word "delegation" was first used to mean "the act of delegating" in the 1610s. Delegate (v.) "to send with power to transact business as a representative," 1520s, from past-participle stem of Latin delegare "to send as a representative," from de "from, away" (see de-) + legare "send with a commission," possibly literally "engage by contract" and related to lex (genitive legis) "contract, law," from PIE root *leg- (1) "to collect, gather."

A paradox of delegation is that it is initially time-consuming. However, the time spent in setting up systems and training staff will pay off in the long term. The principles of delegation are relatively easy to understand; the problem is getting managers to delegate in practice. Obstacles to successful delegation may include lack of training and sense of insecurity on the part of the manager, or external factors such as an absence of suitably skilled staff or the existence of jealousies between employees and associates.

Motivation

The power and ability to succeed is in all of us; all it takes is the motivation to get something happening. Motivation is the act or process of stimulating to action or providing an incentive or motive for an act. The verb "motivate" is believed to have been taken from the French word "motiver" and the German word "motivieren."

70% of employees say that motivation and morale would improve massively with managers saying thank you more. Nearly 80% of American workers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Employee retention is expected to increase by 10% by 2020 due to organizations giving their employees the option to choose their own work style. (Source: Gartner). 29% are engaged and they do their jobs with a high degree of passion. As a result from this lack of employee motivation, an estimated $300 billion is lost each year by employers.
